The Role Of Nurse Patient Relationship Model - 1361 Words

Hildegard Peplau, recognized as the mother of psychiatric nursing, focused on helping psychiatric clients, but her theories have influenced all of nursing. Peplau finished her work, Interpersonal Relations in Nursing, in 1948, and was published in 1952. According to Peplau (1952), nursing is a â€Å"significant, therapeutic, interpersonal process. It functions co-operatively with other human processes that make health possible for individuals in communities†. This interpersonal relationship has become known as the nurse-patient relationship, and it begins once a felt need is present. It is characterized by overlapping phases that have a number of therapeutic goals to be accomplished through the orientation phase, working phase (identification and exploitation), and resolution phase. Peplau views nursing as a force that is always maturing, and developing through educational, therapeutic, and interpersonal practices. Nurses everywhere owe a lot to Hildegard Peplau. She theor ized about a partnership between clients and nurses in developing a better recovery. The interpersonal relationship model is still used by clinicians working with individuals who have psychological problems, however, every nursing field follows this model to develop the nurse-client relationship.
